Jeremy Birch, Leader of the Hastings Borough Council & his position on the transfer of ownership of the pier

First some background:

1) 13th September 2012
  • Congratulations on the compulsory purchase of the pier. Please note that the 1st scheduled community meeting that will be discussing what we are asking the council to make a condition of sale to the HPWRT (or other bidders) is taking place on the 2nd anniversary of the pier fire -October 5th; please see Hastings Justice Facebook group etc & please let me know who you are sending to attend if you cannot make it yourself? Best wishes, Paul (See you at Coastal Currents, page42?)

    • Jeremy Birch It won't be sold it has no value. It will be transferred to the Pier Trust on the basis that they are successful with their bid to the Heritage Lottery fund. This has always been the plan agreed with them over some time - I can't imagine the council will want to put any conditions for that transfer. The council doesn't want to own the Pier it is using its legal powers to act as the necessary intermediary for the change of ownership so that hopefully the Pier Trust can get on with restoration.

What would you like to say to Jeremy Birch about the newly owned pier?; here's my first tuppence worth:

      • Alex Chapman Paul I am not daft and I would like to say something to you, before Jeremy Birch. I find all of your comments confusing to say the least and I am definitely not clear about what you are trying to achieve when reading your blog. Am I going to pay £10 for something that I do not understand? No offence, but I really do think that some 'Plain Talk' is needed here.
      • Paul Crosland Thank you, Alex, for the feedback that you found the blog more complex than you like & that you were not sufficiently intrigued to go beyond asking for clarification. I've been sti...See More
      • Alex Chapman I look forward to reading it Paul and I hope that it will make the meeting sound irresistible!. I am not a member of HPWRT although I helped them out on a few occasions prior to the fire and I was at the introductory meeting with the proposed Architect, I have a lot of respect for their efforts. I undoubtedly see things different than most people in Hastings/St Leonards as I only moved here from London 6 years ago, but this is my tuppence worth. I could not see how on earth HPWRT were ever going to raise enough money to repair the pier prior to the fire. I do not support arson, but to me the irony was that the fire has created a more realistic opportunity to have an ‘Open Pier’. The Victorian structure remains in place, the cost of demolition of buildings was drastically reduced and grants are now hopefully being given which would probably not have otherwise been obtainable.

At the end of the day it is the same old thing which will determine what the new pier will be like ‘Money’! And I would like to see more people, like yourself, putting their efforts into raising as much as possible.

If you are about making impossible demands and objecting to everything that is viable, then I do not think that we shall get on very well.
