What Do We Know About 5G?

The nuts and bolts of 5G – background for the non tech-savvy

(prepared for the #GeneralElection2019 #Pause5G Campaign )

5G

  • Is the fifth-generation (“5G”) digital cellular network technology (how wireless devices such as mobile phones and tablets receive and transmit information)
  • It follows 2G, 3G and 4G
  • 5G gives faster connections with higher capacity of data
  • 5G is already live in many cities across the UK e.g. Manchester and Birmingham
  • 5G is widely used for private networks

Cells and antennae

  • Service areas covered by providers are divided into small geographical areas called cells.
  • Wireless devices communicate by radio waves with a local antenna and an automated transceiver (transmitter and receiver) in the cell, over frequency channels.
  • Local antennae within the cell are connected with the telephone network and the internet with a high bandwidth optical fibre.

5G waves and new antennae

  • 5G use millimetre long waves
  • They have a shorter range than previous waves used (4G, 3G) so each cell will have more antennae (on average a few hundred metres apart)
  • Antennae are several cms tall unlike large antennae previously used
  • Multiple antennae in a cells send mm long waves to a wireless device e.g. mobile phone simultaneously – a technique known as beam forming
  • 4G supports up to 100,000 devices per km squared, whereas 5G supports up to 1,000,000 devices per km squared
  • New spectrum has been allocated to 5G in order to support increased requirements; in March 2018, EU lawmakers agreed to open up 3.6 and 26 GHz bands by 2020 (compared to 700-2500 MHz used by 4G)

Concerns about %G

Interference

  • The spectrum used for 5G will be close to that used by weather and Earth observation satellites – this has already caused significant interference – it impairs weather prediction performance
  • More harmful weather events cannot be picked up – this impacts on national security
  • Many organisations including US Navy and NASA have raised concerns
  • Surveillance
  • As of early 2019, several countries including the UK have taken action to restrict or eliminate use of Chinese equipment  due to espionage fears
  • GCHQ are massively involved to monitor surveillance standards

Health

  • April 2019, Brussels blocked a 5G trial in the city because of radiation laws
  • In Geneva, Switzerland, a planned upgrade to 5G was stopped for the same reason
  • Electromagnetic hypersensitivity is not scientifically recognised, but effects such as headaches and neurasthenia have been claimed form Wi-Fi and 4G as seen in a report by the World Health Organization
  • This presents concerns with 5G which uses higher microwave frequencies from 2.6 GHz to 28 GHz (compared to 700-2500 MHz used by 4G)
  • Critics say wave frequencies used by 5G have not been subjected to substantial scientific research
  • In January 2019, over 180 scientists and medical doctors wrote a letter to officials in the EU demanding a moratorium on 5G coverage in Europe until potential hazards for human health have been investigated
  • The European Commissions’ Scientific Committees on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks (SCHEER) reported in the “Statement on emerging health and environmental issues (2918) “5G networks will soon be rolled out for mobile phone and smart device users. How exposure to electromagnetic fields could affect humans remains a controversial area. Studies have not yielded clear evidence of the impact on mammals, birds or insects. The lack of clear evidence to inform the development of exposure guidelines to 5G technology leaves open the possibility of unintended biological consequences”
  • In US, many senators have raised concerns over health impacts on human and animals

The Parable Of The Screen - Screening Us From Urgent Need

I share this anonymous story for the first time in my life, hoping it will serve as a parable in a burning world in which we all too often hide from pain rather than join together. My ex-FiancĂ©e got away from a knife-wielding rapist who went on to murder another woman in the next couple of days by: 1) threatening to jump to her death from the bridge where accosted & 2) running through suburbia calling for help.

Help didn’t come as everyone was watching TV too engrossed to attend to the agony on the doorstep. Please don’t let that happen again. Join the revolution in #CommunityDevelopment that will not be televised. There are so many ways to look out for each other. Please get creative this way: https://www.freebuddhistaudio.com/audio/details?num=31

Standing for Generosity in the Next Election

It’s got to the point whereby if a General Election is called soon I’m standing for Generosity, and here’s my first draft election leaflet:
Please email me for the latest version of this leaflet to share electronically and/or earn Timebank credits by joining the leaflet distribution team.

7th September update from http://facebook.com/paulcrosland1

Firstly, thank you for the rare courtesy, Paul Campbell, of politely disagreeing with me whilst offering me a useful link to take the next step down my undesired path* - and God knows whether I want to have to go through all that standing for this election entails!
Secondly, what would you say if I suggested that you’ve been distracted by #Brexit (which a European friend wrote to me yesterday about in terms of “The UK has already left, why doesn’t it just get on and leave?!”); distracted from the bigger issues for which it is truly worthwhile getting arrested and prosecuted? https://twitter.com/2066Country

*unprecedented Facebook Generosity in my experience and thus to be championed as a model whilst I stand for Generosity.

Full (1st draft) leaflet text:
I don’t want to be your MP on my own; when elected eleven of us will Job Share.

As an elector in the Hastings & Rye constituency you will be asked to put forward six of the eleven, all of whom will be people who give their time generously in your community e.g. “The Clean Up Man”.

https://youtu.be/XK0_CwtuIQg

For many of us with mental health concerns what we need are job-sharing opportunities so that others have “got our backs” when we are not up to it.

My election campaign will have been a success if it raises awareness of a MORE CARING/SHARING AND RIGHT HONOURABLE way of living in our community.

The awareness of how to empower the community to take on more of its care needs -inspired by Prof Heinz Wolff’s “Care4Care.mov” (please Google It) - will lead many into Right Action.

For me, “Right Action” will mean that, bolstered by your support, I return with a “Right Livelihood Team” of 5 Fellow Buddhists to lead a SHARING AND CARE4CARING PARTY at the next election.

I am confident that within 12 years we can get the necessary community groundswell such that the Hastings & Rye Constituency - which, when forward looking I call @2066Country - puts a RIGHT HONOURABLE JOB SHARE TEAM OF ELEVEN INTO PLACE.

Your present/last MP had no credible answer to the (much applauded) suggestions I made at a public meeting that one of the biggest deficits of government is its lack of a policy to promote sharing as part of the solution to many issues - shortage of housing, traffic congestion etc

Your present/last MP asked me to write to her with advice on what a government policy on sharing could do. I would like this advice to government to be written with your input.

For more on this, and for my track record in #CommunityDevelopment work in (y)our constituency: http://additionalinfo.blogspot.com

Thank you for reading the above and thank you, in advance, for your next step towards “building a more caring and sharing community around you”,
